The One Thing Holding You Back From Feeling Better (It’s Not Time—It’s This)

By Dr. Amy Hawkins ND3/25/2025

We tell ourselves it’s the time.

The schedule.

The endless to-do list.

And yes—if you’re a busy mama, time is absolutely in short supply. But after working with hundreds of women in midlife, I can tell you:Time isn’t the biggest barrier to healing. Worthiness is.

The Hidden Block: Feeling Undeserving of Care

What I see over and over again—especially in women navigating postpartum, perimenopause, or the chaos of middle motherhood—is this deep-rooted belief that everyone else comes first.

We give and give and give. We show up for everyone else. But when it comes to ourselves?

We hesitate.

We put it off.

We convince ourselves that investing in our health is selfish, indulgent, or just not necessary.

Let’s Reframe This: Self-Care Is Not Selfish

Here’s what I need you to know—and believe:

Taking care of yourself is not taking something away from your children.

It’s giving them something they will carry for the rest of their lives:

A mom who is present.

A mom who feels well.

A mom who models resilience and health and joy.

Self-care isn't a spa day or a trendy checklist. It's making decisions that protect your energy, support your hormones, and help you show up as the version of yourself you actually want to be.

This Is the Long Game

If you’ve been stuck in a cycle of:

Chronic fatigue or burnout

Mood swings or irritability you don’t recognize

Weight gain or brain fog that makes daily life harder than it should be

...and still telling yourself you don’t have “enough” time or “haven’t earned” the care you need, I want to challenge that thought today.

Because the truth is:

Your health is not a short-term luxury. It’s a long-term investment.

Not just in your own well-being—but in the generations watching you.

Where to Start (Even If You're Busy)

No, you don’t need to overhaul your life overnight.

But you do need to make a move.

Start with one small step:

  •  Book that blood work.

  • Say yes to the alignment call.

  • Read your body’s signals with the same compassion you offer everyone else.

Because the healthiest thing you can give your family is a version of you that feels strong, clear, and fully alive.

You Are Worth the Effort.

You’re not too busy.

You’re not too far gone.

And you don’t have to “earn” support by pushing yourself to the edge.

You’re already worthy of care. Now it’s time to receive it.
